A simple, budget-friendly ground beef dinner baked in the oven, perfect for weeknights. Includes an optional mushroom gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups beef broth
  • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and chopped onion (if using). Mix gently until just combined; do not overmix.
  3. Shape the mixture into 4-6 oval-shaped patties, about 3/4 inch thick.
  4. Place the patties in a baking dish.
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through.
  6. While the steaks are baking, prepare the gravy (if using). In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  7. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  8. Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth.
  9. Add the sliced mushrooms (if using) and bring the gravy to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
  10. Serve the baked hamburger steaks with the mushroom gravy poured over the top.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture.
  • If you don’t have breadcrumbs, you can use crushed crackers or oats.
  • Ensure your oven is fully preheated before placing the steaks inside.
