Ingredients
Scale
1.5 pounds ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup milk
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 cup chopped onion (optional)
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1.5 cups beef broth
8 ounces sliced mushrooms (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and chopped onion (if using). Mix gently until just combined; do not overmix.
Shape the mixture into 4-6 oval-shaped patties, about 3/4 inch thick.
Place the patties in a baking dish.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through.
While the steaks are baking, prepare the gravy (if using). In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth.
Add the sliced mushrooms (if using) and bring the gravy to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
Serve the baked hamburger steaks with the mushroom gravy poured over the top.
Notes
For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture.
If you don’t have breadcrumbs, you can use crushed crackers or oats.
Ensure your oven is fully preheated before placing the steaks inside.
