Make tender, spiced apple slices baked to perfection with brown sugar and cinnamon. This simple recipe delivers cozy comfort perfect for dessert or a side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium firm apples (like Honeycrisp or Gala)
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a small baking dish.
  2. Wash the apples. Carefully core each apple, leaving the bottom intact so the filling stays inside. You can peel the apples or leave the skin on, based on your preference.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together.
  4. Place the prepared apples into the baking dish. Spoon the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly into the center cavity of each apple.
  5. Drizzle the vanilla extract over the tops of the apples. Place a small piece of butter on top of the sugar mixture in each apple.
  6. Pour the water into the bottom of the baking dish around the apples. This creates steam to help them soften.
  7. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Baking time depends on the size and type of apple you use.
  8. Carefully remove the dish from the oven. Spoon any accumulated syrup from the bottom of the dish over the apples before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add 1/4 cup of rolled oats mixed with the brown sugar and cinnamon to stuff the apples.
  • Serve these warm baked apples with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for a classic dessert experience.
  • If you prefer a saucier result, increase the water in the bottom of the dish to 1/2 cup.
