Make the best homemade hot chocolate from scratch using this stovetop method. This recipe delivers a rich, velvety texture that beats any store-bought mix, perfect for cozy winter nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream, marshmallows, cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Combine the whole milk and heavy cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Heat the mixture until it is steaming and small bubbles form around the edges, but do not let it boil.
  2. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt.
  3. Slowly whisk the dry ingredients into the warm milk mixture until the cocoa powder is fully dissolved and there are no lumps.
  4. Reduce the heat to low. Add the finely chopped bittersweet chocolate to the saucepan. Whisk constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth and creamy. This step creates the rich flavor.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Taste the hot chocolate. If you prefer it sweeter, add one teaspoon of sugar at a time until it reaches your desired sweetness.
  7. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs. Top with your favorite toppings like whipped cream or marshmallows before serving immediately.

Notes

  • For an extra thick hot chocolate, use 5 ounces of chocolate instead of 4, or substitute 1/2 cup of the milk with 1/2 cup of half-and-half.
  • If you want a coffee fusion, add 1/4 cup of strong brewed coffee along with the milk and cream.
  • This recipe makes a decadent hot chocolate perfect for holiday gatherings.
