Ingredients
Scale
1 cup all-purpose flour (must be heat-treated)
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips, plus extra for topping
Instructions
Heat treat the flour: Spread the 1 cup of flour on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave on high in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each interval, until the flour reaches 165°F internally. This usually takes 1.5 to 2 minutes total. Let the flour cool completely before using.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the heat-treated flour, cocoa powder, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and salt until combined.
In a separate large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the softened butter until smooth.
Add the milk and vanilla extract to the butter and mix until just combined.
Gradually add the powdered sugar to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until incorporated, then increase speed to medium and beat until smooth.
Add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients. Mix on low speed until just combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Do not overmix.
Gently fold in the 1/2 cup of mini chocolate chips.
Transfer the dip to a serving bowl. Top with extra mini chocolate chips or sprinkles.
Serve immediately with pretzels, graham crackers, or fruit slices.
Notes
To heat treat flour safely in the oven, spread it on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 10 minutes, checking the temperature to confirm it reaches 165°F.
For a richer flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the milk with 1/4 cup of heavy cream.
If you prefer a lighter dip, replace the butter with 1/2 cup of softened cream cheese, but note this changes the texture slightly.
This dip tastes best when served the day it is made.
