Create a rich, crowd-pleasing appetizer with this easy recipe for homemade caramelized onion dip. This creamy version, perfect for game day or parties, bakes up warm and savory.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, divided
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup shredded Gruyere cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Combine the sliced onions, butter, and olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet. Cook over medium-low heat.
  2. Stir the onions occasionally for 30 to 40 minutes until they are deeply golden brown and sweet. Do not rush this step; low and slow creates the best flavor.
  3. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of salt and the thyme, if using. Remove the onions from the heat and let them cool slightly.
  4. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
  5. Add the sour cream and mayonnaise to the cream cheese. Mix until fully combined and creamy.
  6. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the cream cheese mixture. Season with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  7. Transfer the dip mixture to a small, oven-safe baking dish. Sprinkle the Gruyere cheese on top, if using.
  8. Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the dip is heated through and the topping is lightly golden.
  9. Serve warm with your favorite chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • You can caramelize the onions up to two days ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the sour cream with plain Greek yogurt.
  • This dip is excellent served cold as well; simply skip the baking step.
