A simple and delicious homemade guacamole recipe perfect for parties, game days, or taco nights. Learn how to make chunky or smooth guacamole with tips for selecting ripe avocados and preventing browning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 12 serrano peppers, finely minced (seeds removed for less heat)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 Roma tomato, seeds removed and diced

Instructions

  1. Cut the ripe avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a medium bowl.
  2. Mash the avocado flesh with a fork to your desired consistency. For chunky guacamole, leave some larger pieces. For smoother guacamole, mash more thoroughly.
  3. Add the chopped red onion, cilantro, minced serrano peppers, lime juice, and salt to the bowl.
  4. If using, add the diced tomato.
  5. Stir all ingredients together until well combined.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt or lime juice if needed.
  7. Serve immediately or cover tightly with plastic wrap, pressing the wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to prevent browning.

Notes

  • To select ripe avocados, gently press the skin. It should yield slightly to pressure but not be mushy.
  • For make-ahead guacamole, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to minimize air exposure and prevent browning. Store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
  • Adjust the amount of serrano pepper to control the spice level. Remove seeds and membranes for milder heat.
  • This recipe is easily scalable for larger parties.
