Upgrade your weeknight dinner with these rich, saucy Texas Toast Sloppy Joes. We use simple ingredients to create a flavorful ground beef filling served on thick, buttery, cheesy Texas toast for a satisfying comfort meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 8 slices Texas Toast (thick-cut bread)
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese or preferred melting cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Cook until softened, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break the meat apart with a spoon and cook until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and water to the skillet. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let it cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to deepen.
  6. While the filling simmers, prepare the Texas toast. Spread the softened butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
  7. Place the Texas toast, butter-side down, in a separate large skillet or on a griddle over medium heat. Toast until golden brown and crisp, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  8. Place one slice of cheese on four of the toasted slices. Cover the skillet briefly until the cheese melts slightly.
  9. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe filling onto the four slices topped with melted cheese. Top each with a plain slice of toast.
  10. Serve immediately. This messy but delicious sandwich is perfect for game day or a quick family dinner.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, brush the unbuttered side of the Texas toast with garlic powder mixed with a little melted butter before toasting.
  • If you prefer a tangier filling, substitute 1/4 cup of the water with apple cider vinegar.
  • This recipe makes a hearty filling; if you want extra saucy sloppy joes, add an extra 1/4 cup of water during the simmering step.
